The cardigan's (or at least that moniker) origin reportedly stretch back to the Crimean War and takes its name from the Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudnell. The concept of a close knitted jacket, however, dates back further than that. No matter where it came from, it remains a mainstay of cold weather clothing year after year. It's undoubtedly a care-free sweater and is remarkably versatile. Stylistically-speaking it can be used to wrap up a t-shirt/ jeans combination in a breezy approach to casual layering, especially when it's left open. Conversely, button it up and wear it with a sport shirt, chinos and some Chelsea boots for a sleek and sophisticated look.

Neck: For collar size, measure around your neck, keeping two fingers between the measuring tape and your neck.
Chest: (Use for suit or jacket size) Measure over a shirt. Tape should be up under arms and straight across the shoulder blades.
Sleeve: With your elbow bent, measure from the middle of your back, directly below the neck, across the shoulders and elbow to the wrist. Total inches is your sleeve length.
Waist: Measure over your shirt at the point your slacks are normally worn.
Outseam: Lay a pair of good fitting slacks flat across a hard surface. Measure from top of waistband to the bottom hem of the slacks along the outside seam.
